Description

A comforting bake featuring sweet potatoes and ground turkey, perfect for a cozy meal. This dish combines the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes with savory ground turkey, creating a warm and satisfying casserole. It’s an easy-to-make, homestyle sweet potato mash that evokes the feeling of a cozy hug, ideal for fall or any chilly evening.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 0.5 cup chicken broth
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Boil or steam the cubed sweet potatoes until tender. Drain and mash them in a bowl.
  3. While the sweet potatoes cook, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the ground turkey to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  5. Stir in the minced garlic, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  6. Season the turkey mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Add the mashed sweet potatoes to the skillet with the turkey mixture. Stir gently to combine.
  8. Pour in the chicken broth and milk. Stir until everything is well incorporated and the mixture is creamy. This creates your cozy sweet potato ground mixture.
  9. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until heated through and lightly golden on top.
  11. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving your warm sweet potato dish.

Notes

  • For a creamier texture, use whole milk or heavy cream instead of regular milk.
  • Adjust spices to your preference for a more or less spiced sweet potato comfort food.
  • You can add other vegetables like peas or corn for added flavor and texture.
  • This dish can be made ahead and reheated.
