Description

Delight in the fluffy texture and buttery sweetness of Vanilla Pan de Mallorca Rolls, a cherished Puerto Rican delicacy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (can substitute with gluten-free flour)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (reduce for lower sweetness)
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast (ensure it’s fresh)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (around 110°F; almond or soy milk can be used)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted; margarine or coconut oil can be used)
  • 2 large eggs (egg replacers can work for vegan versions)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or use vanilla bean paste for a bolder flavor)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (optional, for dusting before serving)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk with granulated sugar and sprinkle in active dry yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Blend in flour, salt, eggs, and vanilla extract. Gradually add melted butter until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1-2 hours until doubled.
  4. Punch down the dough, roll it into a rectangle, brush with butter, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, roll tightly, and slice into 12 pieces.
  5. Arrange prepared pieces in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffed.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Brush tops with melted butter while warm. Cool slightly before serving.
  8. Optional: Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Adjust sugar levels based on your taste preference.
  • Make sure the yeast is fresh for best results.
  • For vegan options, use egg replacers and plant-based milk.
