- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup warm milk (for dough)
- 3 large eggs, room temperature
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon butter (for custard)
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Instructions
- Heat 1 cup milk until steaming. Whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch. Slowly whisk hot milk into eggs, return to saucepan, and cook until thick.

- In a mixer bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Add warm milk and eggs; mix until dough forms.
- Knead until smooth, then add butter gradually, kneading until glossy and elastic.
- Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled.
- Divide dough into 8–10 pieces. Flatten each, add custard and chocolate chips, seal tightly, and place seam-side down on a lined baking sheet.
- Cover and let rise again until puffy. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush with beaten egg and bake until deep golden brown.
- Cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar if desired.
