Description

Hearty Cheddar and Herb Soda Bread for Cozy Winter Nights

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups All-Purpose Flour (substitute with whole wheat flour for a denser texture)
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda (double-check it’s fresh for the best rise)
  • 1 tsp Salt (can reduce to ½ tsp for lower sodium)
  • ½ cup Fresh Chives (can swap with green onions or skip)
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Thyme (or use dried herbs (reduce total by 1 tsp))
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Rosemary (or use dried herbs (reduce total by 1 tsp))
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Sage (or use dried herbs (reduce total by 1 tsp))
  • 1 cup Cheddar Cheese (try Gruyère or Monterey Jack for a twist)
  • 1½ cups Buttermilk (can replace with milk mixed with lemon juice or vinegar)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C) to create the perfect environment for baking.
  2. Whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Mix in the chopped herbs and shredded cheddar cheese until evenly distributed.
  4. Add buttermilk, stirring gently until the dough just comes together.
  5. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently.
  6. Shape it into a smooth ball and pat down into a 7-inch circle.
  7. Transfer the dough to a floured baking sheet and score a cross into the top.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven at 425°F for 15 minutes, then reduce temperature to 375°F and continue to bake for 30-35 minutes.
  9. Cool wrapped in a tea towel to soften the crust.
